Welcome. ASCE is committed to preparing the civil engineering profession for tomorrow’s world. The publication The Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025 marks the culmination of almost five years of effort and represents the collective wisdom of more than 60 experts from around the world. To quote Winston Churchill, “This is not the end, but perhaps it is the end of the beginning.” The aspirational vision presented in this book is a look at the future and what can and should be. In order to turn this vision into reality, much work must occur by many professionals around the globe. ASCE and the civil engineering profession can meet this challenging task through will and determination. When you read Vision 2025, we hope you will be inspired to envision tomorrow and help prepare for a new world.

Summit on the Future of the Civil Engineering Profession in 2025
Articulating a Global Vision
Civil engineering leaders gathered in June 2006 for the Summit on the Future of Civil Engineering—2025 to articulate a global vision for civil engineering. To summarize the discussions of the Summit, ASCE released The Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025. This report also reflects the dedication, creativity and innovative spirit of the Summit Steering Committee. The report fulfills the purpose of that important meeting, and reflects the participants’ preference of choice over chance. There are only two futures for civil engineering around the globe; the one the profession creates for itself or, in a void, the one others create for civil engineering. Civil engineers came to the summit to choose their profession’s future.
The world of 2025 will present even more challenging opportunities than are faced today by the civil engineering profession. Civil engineers will serve as master builders, environmental stewards, innovators and integrators; managers of risk and uncertainty; and leaders in shaping public policy. To anticipate this new world, Vision 2025 will serve as a guide for the future development of policies, plans, processes and progress within the civil engineering community and beyond. The report is a call to action for individuals and organizations, providing direction to achieve the vision’s goals and prepare for the profession’s future.
