What is an ASCE Chapter or International Student Group?
The objective of the ASCE student program is to help students prepare themselves for entry into the Civil Engineering profession and society.
Students must master principles and techniques of engineering to earn their degree. There are, in addition, important nontechnical subjects, generally called "professional matters," which are not usually covered in class work. Many aspects of these professional matters lend themselves to Student Chapter or Group programs.
Student Chapters and Groups of the American Society of Civil Engineers also help civil engineering students begin those professional contacts and associations which, continued through professional life, are so valuable to the practicing engineer in serving mankind and the engineering profession more effectively.
Typical Chapter and Group activities consist of holding regular meetings with a professional speaker, meeting with the ASCE professional Section/Branch in the area, having social events, participating in regional conference competitions each spring, attending workshops for student chapter leaders, and attending the ASCE national convention. The leadership of a Chapter or Group consists of elected student officers, a Faculty Advisor, and two Practitioner Advisors. The Practitioner Advisors are the students' link to the professional Section or Branch in the area.
ASCE National Student Member Status can now be obtained free of charge! Students need only to be pursuing a degree in civil engineering to be eligible; except for students who have an existing ASCE Chapter or International Group at their schools. These students must first join this Chapter or Group and can then apply for National Student Membership. Students can join by filling out the online application or calling 1-800-548-ASCE to request information.
