Engineers Make a Difference

Engineer Make a World of Difference:

Celebrate Volunteerism

One Million Hours!

Collectively, America's engineers contribute untold hours annually to public service.  ASCE members, with the support of engineering firms and agencies, represent a significant segment of this volunteer force.  As the 2010 society chair of National Engineers Week, ASCE is giving special recognition to engineer volunteers!

Celebrate Your Volunteers

Engineers Week is a great opportunity for ASCE members to celebrate volunteerism.  Whether your section or branch collaborates with engineering coalitions or they go solo for Engineers Week, there is a lot of planning going on.  Using the theme, Engineers Make a World of Difference in this year's celebration will help showcase the contribution engineers are already making in the community and bring greater recognition to members who have been contributing their time and talent.

Popsicle Bridge Contest

(Richmond, VA) Over 100 students participated in Careers in Engineering Day on Feb.22, at the Science Museum of Virginia, allowing students to interact with engineers, corporate professionals and university and college representatives.

Every year, the Richmond Joint Engineers Council (RJEC) hosts Careers in Engineering Day in conjunction with National Engineers Week. The RJEC is a volunteer coalition of engineering, scientific and technical societies from Richmond and Petersburg promoting engineering education. Not only does the event provide the opportunity to interact with professionals, it demonstrates the importance of team work and enhances skill building with engineering competitions.

This year, the Popsicle Bridge Contest was a great success with over 100 participants. Students were grouped in teams and were assigned to build the strongest bridge, weighing the least out of 300 Popsicle sticks. A team of ASCE members joined in the fun, competing against students. Participants performed exceptionally well with bridges holding over 200 pounds.

In 2010 , the event will take place Sunday, Feb. 28 at the Science Museum of Virginia. .

(Washington, D.C.) National Engineers Week 2009 soared as ASCE took on Design Squad’s “High Rise” activity for the Discover Engineering Family Day at the National Building Museum. The National Capital Section’s Kirin Smith led a team of ASCE volunteers who assisted thousands of kids with a Design Squad activity  that challenged them to build a tower capable of supporting a tennis ball at least 18 inches off the ground while withstanding the force of wind from a fan.

Along with her annual support of National Family Day, Smith balances additional outreach commitments, including her connection to the ASCE/Salvadori Center Middle School Educator Institute, a pilot program that helps middle school teachers bring engineering concepts into the classroom through a multidisciplinary teaching method that explores the built environment. Smith, along with several other ASCE mentor/engineers in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area, participated in a series of training workshops in 2008 and 2009. With the support of volunteers such as Kirin, ASCE’s role as a leader in pre-college outreach continues to expand in the nation’s capital.

Judges at Future City Judges Make a Difference at

Future City Competition

(Chicago, IL) Chicago’s Future City competition was a great success again in 2009 with over 100 students from 18 Chicago schools participating in the regional competition held Jan.24 at the University of Illinois. This year’s theme for the competition was Water, with students asked to design cities with systems to conserve and reuse this most precious resource. Several volunteer engineers from the ASCE Illinois section participated in the event as planners, mentors, and judges.

Chicago’s Future City Competition was part of a national competition held annually during National EWeek. First place winners from 40 regions around the country are invited to travel to Washington D.C. to compete for a Grand Prize. Engineer volunteers are involved every step of the way, from advising teams on their Sim City 4 Deluxe software designs, and the construction of their scaled 3D tale top models, to judging competitions, and even travelling with students to the final competition in the nation’s capital.

Planning for the Future City Competition gets underway in the Fall each year. Learn how you can get involved in your region.
