Tips for Launching a Program of Your Own

Add Mentoring to your list of offerings in your Section or Branch.  Here are some tips to get your program started:

  • Designate a local mentoring program “champion” to coordinate and promote the mentoring opportunities to Section/Branch members and potential members
  • Develop a Mentoring Committee to build the program
  • Solicit the support and involvement of the Section/Branch Board
  • Ask interested mentors and protégés to make at least a one year commitment to the program
  • Allocate a one-year financial commitment of approximately $3,000-$5,000 to build, promote and support the program
  • Implement mentoring training programs for both mentors and protégés
  • Explore Section and Branch sample documents: protégé/mentor application, workshop agenda, and workshop notebook table of contents.

Testimonials from Mentors and Protégés

Testimonials from Mentoring Pilot Programs

“Mentoring is a powerful tool in an individual’s own personal and professional development. This program was designed for those who want to be mentors, as well as those who seek mentors, matching individuals with common interest and expertise. This program fulfilled a need in the San Diego Section and created an environment to accelerate a younger member’s professional development by tapping into the deep pool of expertise and talents within ASCE.”
– Jennifer Chen, P.E, M.ASCE, PBS&J, San Diego, CA
Mentoring Program Champion

“Having a mentoring relationship is helping me develop a clear understanding of the various roles of civil engineers, providing insight from the management perspective and allowing me to effectively plan the future of my engineering career.”
– Nancy Hanna, EIT, A.M.ASCE, Civil Engineering Designer, Riverside, CA

“As a mentor, protégés can get to know you on their own terms and realize they can trust you.  Allowing them to just bounce ideas, emotions and opinions off you takes a great load off their minds.” – Jeffrey C. Heden, P.E.  M.ASCE, President, J.C. Heden and Associates, Inc. Water, Wastewater and Hydraulics, San Diego, CA
