ASCE's International Program at

the Society's 139th Annual Conference

In 2009 the International Program at the ASCE Annual Conference in Kansas City brought together engineers from the U.S. and some 15 countries to hear presentations and exchange ideas on investing in the sustainable infrastructure.

On Friday, October 30, 2009, international delegates attended following sessions: “The Economic Crisis -- Leveraging Infrastructure Development for Recovery and Civil Engineering Leadership in Developing Sustainable Infrastructure.”  

The stand-alone portion of the ASCE International Program started on Saturday, October 31 with the International Roundtable -- Investing in Sustainable Infrastructure for Economic Growth, followed by the International Luncheon and the International Reception and Dinner.

On Sunday, November 1, 2009 the ASCE Continuing Education Leadership Webinar, “The 7 Qualities of Effective Leaders” was presented by Stuart G. Walesh, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE.

Next year's 140th Conference is set for Las Vegas -- mark your 2010 calendar for Oct. 21-23.

Worldwide, Civil Engineers Deal With Similar Challenges

An ASCE delegation led by Wayne Klotz, 2009 ASCE President, P.E., D.WRE, F.ASCE, traveled to Brazil to attend The World Engineers' Convention, hosted jointly by the Brazilian engineering groups CONFEA and FEBRAE, and sponsored by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and UNESCO. The U.S. delegation, including several ASCE Past Presidents, had a unique opportunity to represent ASCE in two international engineering communities, the Pan American Federation of Engineering Organizations (UPADI) and WFEO.

The issues addressed at the convention revealed remarkable similarities among many countries around the world, including areas such as recruiting the next generation of engineers; education; licensure; sustainability; climate change mitigation and adaptation; development of renewable energy sources; and inadequate infrastructure funding. All these issues impact many fields of engineering--civil, mechanical, electrical/electronic, and chemical, as well as new and emerging areas such as materials engineering and nanotechnology.

In 2011, Geneva, Switzerland, will become the fourth venue of the World Engineers' Convention. WEC 2011 will focus on energy issues with the theme "Engineers Power the World--Facing the Global Energy Challenge".

International Activities

The International Department supports the ASCE International Activities Committee (IAC)--which considers policies and activities to advance the international interests of the Society--and the Region 10 Board of Governors, representing all sections and groups outside the U.S.

International and IAC help service the needs of ASCE’s domestic and international members; disseminate knowledge on engineering in the global environment; and collaborate with international groups, sections, and Agreement of Cooperation (AOC) societies to mutually develop relationships and share knowledge helpful to professional growth.

International supports the operations of international sections and groups in cooperation with the Geographic Services Department, and helps countries in need through capacity building, which includes collaboration with the ASCE Institutes and the Technical Activities Committee (TAC), and Continuing Education.

International fosters relationships with other organizations to further ASCE’s goals, such as the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, the Pan-American Federation of Engineering Associations (UPADI), USAID, and UNESCO, among others.

The Region 10 Board of Governors, with International, oversees the operations of 12 international sections and 19 international groups while providing its chair as a member on the ASCE Board of Direction.
