Wayne Clough To Head Smithsonian

The Smithsonian Institution has announced it has chosen G. Wayne Clough, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE to lead one of the world's preeminent museums and research centers as its 12th Secretary, effective July 1, 2008. Dr. Clough is an ASCE Distinguished Member, a title second only to ASCE President.

President of the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1994, Dr. Clough, 66, has nine ASCE national awards to his credit, most recently the 2004 OPAL Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to education. Twice he has received civil engineering's oldest honor, the Norman Medal. Widely recognized for his teaching and research, Dr. Clough brings academic achievement, leadership skills, public policy experience, and accomplishments in management, science and public service to the Smithsonian position.

Dr. Clough’s research interests include geotechnical engineering, earthquakes and soil structure, and he has taken a leading role on the National Academies’ Committee on New Orleans Regional Hurricane Protection Projects. He also currently serves on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, and on the National Science Board, the governing body of the National Science Foundation.  Learn more about Dr. Clough and his Smithsonian appointment.
