ASCE is taking steps to elevate standards to curb corrupt practices around the world. About 10 percent of the total $3.9 trillion invested in 2004 in global construction, or $390 billion was lost to bribery, fraud and corruption. ASCE is raising awareness of the real costs of corruption by being a catalyst for cooperation and action by engineers worldwide. ASCE has asked individual engineers around the world to sign An Engineer's Charter: Combating Corruption in Engineering and Construction, and has promoted the charter in various locations including Cairo, Warsaw, Rome, Latin America, Asia and Puerto Rico. This effort to tackle corruption is an important way for the world's engineering community to encourage sustainable development and help improve the welfare and quality of life for populations around the globe.
