Las Vegas at Night

Las Vegas continues to build upon its reputation as a vibrant showcase for the extraordinary. This is the city that attracts more than 36 million visitors a year by offering the grandest hotels, the biggest stars in entertainment, the highest caliber of award-winning chefs and master sommeliers, and, of course, the brightest lights.

Las Vegas Fun Facts

  • When Paul Anka first played Vegas he was too young to be allowed in the casino.
  • Bugsy Siegel named his casino the Flamingo after the long legs of his showgirl girlfriend.
  • Vegas Vic, the enormous neon cowboy that towers over Fremont Street, is the world's largest mechanical neon sign.
  • In Nevada it is mandatory that video slot machines pay a minimum of 75 percent on average.
  • Howard Hughes stayed at the Desert Inn for so long that he was asked to leave. He bought the hotel.
  • Seventeen of the 20 biggest hotels in the U.S. are in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas; a desert oasis destination resort located in Southern Nevada, has many of its own unique engineering challenges due to local soil conditions, gaming environment and political back drop. The compilation of these unique issues are where “Engineering for Hospitality” actually happens with projects that are designed and constructed within a fast track delivery approach.

These projects, on top of being fast track, are some of the most complex structures and sites in the world. This environment uses cutting edge technology combined with gut reactions in order to keep a project moving forward on an already critical time line to complete construction.

The structures congress 2011 will be held for the first time in Las Vegas, and it promises to be a great experience with informative sessions to improve your technical knowledge base and evening events on the town in the most exciting city in the world.

National Landmarks outside of Las Vegas

Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is an engineering wonder of the world just 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Formerly named Boulder Dam, this historic man-made creation tamed the mighty Colorado River and created North America's largest man-made lake, Lake Mead. The 726-foot-high, arch-gravity dam is 660 feet thick and forever changed the face of the western United States. On-site tours of the dam are available to the public throughout the year.

Hoover Dam     Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon

This scenic park is located just a few miles west of the Las Vegas Strip. Visitors can go hiking, rock climbing or take a scenic drive through the park.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Lake Mead NRA offers year-round recreational opportunities. Its lakes cater to boaters, swimmers, and fishermen while its desert rewards hikers, wildlife photographers, and roadside sightseers. It is also home to thousands of desert plants and animals, adapted to survive in an extreme place where rain is scarce and temperatures soar.
