Special General Session: Construction for the 21st Century
5:45 - 6:30 p.m.
The art of construction in the 21st Century lies in the appreciation of the necessary attributes that complete a structure aesthetic, form, strength, functionality and practicality. In today's world these goals are addressed by the architect, the structural engineer, and the contractor. By expanding these roles, it increases our understanding of each discipline and how these interactions can create something truly special. Mr. Calatrava will share his concept of turning functional structures into works of art, even when dealing with standards and regulations that limit creativity.
Architect, artist, and engineer Santiago Calatrava was born in 1951 in Valencia, Spain. Calatrava completed his first building in the United States in 2001 with the widely hailed expansion of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Other major projects completed in recent years have included the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (2004); HSB Turning Torso Tower in Malmo, Sweden (2005); and the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia (Valencia Opera House, 2006), part of his immense City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain. Among his major recent commissions, Calatrava is now designing the World Trade Center Transportation Hub in New York City.
Special General Session Speaker: Santiago Calatrava, P.E.

| Founded fourteen years at the Dabbs Hotel along the river in Llano, Texas, the Asylum Street Spankers stand as one of America's most distinctive groups. Defiantly acoustic, fiercely independent and absurdly good, the Spankers have been led by founders Christina Marrs and Wammo from being a country-blues revival act playing happy hours in Austin, through nearly 40 musicians, endless touring and constant evolution to being an internationally reknowned underground institution. Fueled by an ethos born of their punk roots, Marrs and Wammo have built their lives around making unique music that surprises and entertains. | |
