The theme of the 2009 Structures Congress, “Don’t Mess with Structural Engineers - Expanding our Role,” is more than a play on words of the famous saying, “Don’t Mess with Texas.” Austin, Texas, the location of the Congress, will afford attendees the opportunity to sample the flair and uniqueness of Texas while offering state-of-the-art technical sessions and events designed to expand the role of structural engineers in today’s highly competitive business environment.

The 2009 Congress will offer information from research and practice in more than 100 technical sessions including:

  • The First International Symposium on Disproportionate Collapse
  • One complete track devoted to the Congress theme, with sessions on feature bridges, building code complexity, stadiums, historic bridges, and a panel discussion on structural engineering education
  • Business and Professional Practice
  • Non-Building and Special Structures
  • CASE Spring Risk Management Convocation and Breakfast with War Stories
  • A special session: “NIST Investigation of World Trade Center Building 7: Findings and Recommendations” with Dr. S. Shyam Sunder, director and lead investigator, Building and Fire Research Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology

 

Attendees will also have the opportunity to attend:

  • Pre-Congress technical seminars: three all-day courses on Wednesday, April 29 include LRFD of Highway Bridges, Wood Frame Buildings, and the Forensic Practice Workshop. Five morning sessions on Thursday, April 30 on the ASCE Blast Standard, Sustainable Structures, Wind, Ethics, and Design & Construction of Storm Shelters.
  • The Opening Awards Luncheon with Plenary Session presented by Professor Jack Breen
  • A networking barbeque following a tour of the Ferguson Structural Engineering Lab at the University of Texas
