An Invitation To Attend

On behalf of the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers, we would like to invite you to the Renaissance Austin Hotel in Austin, Texas - - the site of the 41st Structures Congress from April 30 - May 2, 2009.

This year’s Congress consists of 10 concurrent technical sessions that focus on the theme: “Don’t Mess with Structural Engineers - Expanding our Role."  The Congress will demonstrate what is redefining structural engineering in the areas of bridge and transportation structures, buildings, and advances in research.  You will exchange ideas with your peers and find out how their company has adapted to changes in today’s global economy.  Take this opportunity to earn PDHs and apply your new knowledge so that you and your business will thrive.

The Congress opens at noon on Thursday, April 30, with a keynote address by Dr. John E. Breen, holder of the Nasir I. Al Rashid Chair in Civil Engineering, University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Breen will address the history and underlying philosophy of contemporary consensus standards for buildings and bridges, and present strategies for more effective codes and standards.

The 2009 Congress will offer information from research and practice in more than 100 technical sessions including:

  • The First International Symposium on Disproportionate Collapse
  • Design of Concrete and Masonry Structures
  • Codes and Standards
  • Bridge and Transportation Structures
  • Multi-Cross Discipline
  • Business and Professional Practice
  • Non-Building and Special Structures

You won’t want to miss Dr. S. Shyam Sunder from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, who will present the NIST Investigation of World Trade Center Building 7: Findings and Recommendations.  Attendees will also have the opportunity to attend Pre-Congress technical sessions and social events.  You won’t want to miss Friday night’s social event which includes the opportunity to experience a sample of Austin’s world famous live music, BBQ, and a tour of the internationally recognized Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory.

Santiago Calatrava, P.E., world renowned architect, artist, and engineer, will be discussing the art of construction in the 21st Century, sharing his concept of turning functional structures in works of art, when dealing with standards and regulations that limit creativity.

By increasing communication skills, helping the practicing engineer expand his or her knowledge, leadership, and influence, we believe that delegates will learn how to excel in this new and exciting environment.

Be sure to plan on visiting our Exhibit Hall packed with the latest products and services from leading suppliers and service companies in the structural engineering community.
