Brightwater Conveyance System
Sponsored by MWH
This is your chance for an up close look at the installation of multiple piping systems inside a large diameter tunnel! Join us on a site tour of a portion of the Brightwater Conveyance System.
King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, Wastewater Treatment Division determined that a new wastewater treatment system (treatment plant, conveyance system, and outfall) was required to
serve the rapidly growing population of King and Snohomish counties, north of Seattle. The Brightwater Treatment System is currently under construction and scheduled for completion in 2013.
The Brightwater Conveyance System consists of approximately 13 miles of tunnel conveying up to 170-mgd of untreated wastewater to the treatment plant and the same quantity of treated effluent to Puget Sound. Construction started in 2006, and limited treatment plant start-up and operations are anticipated in late 2011.
The Central Tunnel Contract is one of three tunnel construction contracts in the conveyance system. Includes two tunnel segments:
Central Combined Tunnel: 14-foot diameter tunnel approximately 11,600 ft long, containing a 72-in diameter gravity pressure effluent pipeline, a 54-in diameter influent gravity pipeline, a 24-in diameter reclaimed water pipeline, and an upper storage chamber for 4 million gallons of influent peak flow storage.
Central Effluent Tunnel: 20,000-ft, 14-ft-diameter effluent tunnel.
You are invited to a site tour that will provide background on the Brightwater system, an overview of the tunnel
construction, and an up close chance to see the pipe installation in the tunnel.
When on site, Brightwater engineers from the MWH and Jacobs Associates JV will provide you with an overview of the Brightwater project, with an emphasis on the conveyance system. They will also provide more detailed information on the methods used for installation of the pipelines in the various Brightwater tunnel segments.
You will descend 80 feet into the access shaft and enter the Bothell Combined Tunnel where you will see the final stages of the installation of the effluent, influent, and reclaimed water
pipelines in the lower half of the 14-ft tunnel. You will also see the concrete backfill that is being placed around the pipelines and the paved surface that will form the invert of the influent storage chamber in the upper half of the tunnel. Engineers from the design team will review the design, the tunneling and the pipeline installation process and sequencing, and will be available to answer questions.
- Bus transportation from the Westin Hotel to the site will be provided
- Tour will be located on an active construction site. For safety reasons, all attendees are asked to wear appropriate hard-soled footwear (site may be wet)
- This facility is not handicap accessible, with only stair access to 80-foot access shaft
- Hard hats, vests and eye protection will be provided
- Space is limited (50 people maximum)
