History:
San Francisco was once said to be: "49 square miles surrounded by reality."

San Francisco is indeed 7 x 7 miles and with a scenic drive, you can experience most of it in just one day. The 49-Mile Scenic Drive, which was conceived in 1938 for those attending the Golden Gate International Exposition, was meant to present San Francisco as a tourist destination.

The Route:
The 49 points of interest that define the drive today are a bit different from 1938, but their meaning remains the same. The city wishes to highlight its iconic and historic landmarks, of which it has many terrific ones. From the beaux-arts buildings of the Civic Center to the Golden Gate Bridge to the waterfront, you'll travel around the city, through its districts, and up and over its hills.
