Keynote Address:
ASCE’s Report Card for America’s Infrastructure: Solutions for Improving the Nation’s Infrastructure
PRESENTER: Andrew W. Herrmann, P.E., SECB, F.ASCE
ASCE 2012 President
Andrew Herrmann, ASCE 2012 President and chairman of the 2009 Report Card Advisory Council, will provide a brief overview of the 2009 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure and an in-depth analysis of ASCE’s recommendations for strategies to improve infrastructure, including promoting sustainability and resilience. In addition, he will discuss an update on the Society’s activities to advance those solutions. Herrmann served on the Advisory Council for the 2003 and 2005 Report Cards for America’s Infrastructure and chaired the council for the 2009 Report Card.
During his 37 years at Hardesty & Hanover, LLP, Andrew Herrmann has held many positions including structural detailer, structural engineer, project engineer, and associate engineer before becoming a managing partner and then a principal. Within ASCE, Herrmann has served as president of the New York City Metropolitan Section, chair of the Technical Administrative Committee on Bridges, and director of Region 1.

Application of Evolutionary Computing to Disaster Restoration and Prevention Problems
PRESENTER: Hitoshi Furuta, Ph.D., Kansai University
Dr. Furuta is a Professor in the Department of Informatics at Kansai University, Osaka, Japan. Currently, he is the chair of the Task Committee on Load Specification in the Japan Society of Civil Engineers, chair of the Committee of Asset Management in Japan Construction Consulting Association, and the chair of the committee on Data Exchange Format for Highway Construction in Japan Highway Corporation. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 refereed publications.
New Random Field Concepts, with Applications to Risk and Vulnerability Assessment
PRESENTER: Erik VanMarcke, Ph.D., M.ASCE, Princeton University
Dr. VanMarcke is a Professor at Princeton University. He is the author of around 200 professional papers and reports, and two books: Random Fields: Analysis and Synthesis, The MIT Press, 1983; Web edition, Rare Book Services, Princeton N.J. (1998); and Quantum Origins of Cosmic Structure, A.A. Balkema Publishers, Rotterdam, Netherlands and Brookfield VT, Nov. 1997.
