Student/Organizational Member Reception

(All registered students welcome. G-I Organizational Members by invitation only)


Sunday, February 21
5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.


This special reception brings together future employers and employees for the chance to relax and learn about the profession and each other. The Reception immediately preceeds the main Welcome Reception.
 
Students wishing to be considered for a $200 stipend for attending the Student/Organizational Reception (as described on page 12 of the Preliminary Program on Sunday, February 21, 2010 from 5-6pm) plus other activities at GeoFlorida, please click on this link http://www.asce.org/test/form-sample/geo_student.cfm to complete the brief online Student Questionnaire by January 21, 2010.  You must first register for the conference. You will receive notification of the committee's decision by early February, with the check following shortly thereafter.

If you have already registered for GeoFlorida 2010 as a student and not completed the form, click on the link above, complete the form, and submit it by January 21, 2010.


Student Paper & Poster Competitions


Tuesday, February 23

Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to submit technical papers to the Congress. Each paper must represent original work performed by the student, and may not be co-authored by a faculty
member. Select authors representing a cross-section of undergraduate and graduate students will be invited to prepare a poster that will be judged during the GeoChallenge Competition. The top two paper
authors and poster presenters will be recognized at the Heroes and Awards Luncheon. This year’s Student Paper Competition and Student Poster Competition winner will be congratulated at the Student Donor Recognition Reception, Tuesday, February 23, at 6:30 pm local time.  Details.
 

GeoChallenge Student Competition

Student teams from across the country will showcase their design, construction, communication, and teamwork skills during the 5th annual GeoChallenge Student Competition. This highlight of every GeoCongress since 2005 involves each student team constructing a model-scale
mechanically-stabilized earth wall consisting of dry sand and paper reinforcement behind a poster board facing in a plywood box. Each team is judged on the wall’s ability to carry a surface load, the amount of
reinforcement used, the time needed for construction, and the quality of their design report. Do not miss the excitement and drama of this student contruction challenge!  Details.
 

GeoPrediction 2010: GeoPrediction Student Competition

Undergraduate and graduate student teams from across the country are invited to compete in the New GeoPREDICTION! GeoPrediction will be held on Tuesday, February  23, also at the same time as the Student Geo-Challenge MSE Wall Competition (1:45 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.) at GeoFlorida 2010, in West Palm Beach, Florida.  The objective of the GeoPrediction is to develop an accurate prediction of geotechnical behavior given detailed information regarding subsurface, boundary, and initial conditions, as well as the geotechnical/ structural/hydraulic loading. The 2010 GeoPrediction, involves developing a finite difference (FD) computer code to predict seepage conditions around a cofferdam, as well as the water pressures on the cofferdam walls.  Read the Announcement, Rules, and Problem Statement in order to compete. Entries are due on or before January 29th, 2010, at 6 pm CST.
