Tour #2: Colorado School of Mines Tour
(Maximum: 25)
Participants will travel from the hotel to the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Edgar Mine, also known as Colorado School of Mines’ Experimental Mine. In the 1870s, it produced high-grade silver, gold, lead and copper. The Edgar Mine was named after the Edgar mineral vein that runs along the hillside above the mine. CSM acquired the mine in 1921, when officers of the then bankrupt Big Five Mining Company agreed to lease the mine to the school. CSM has since acquired additional workings and land to form the present experimental mine holdings, which are now the property of the school. The mine is considered to have the safest rock formations and best underground workings of any comparable facility in the area. After eating a box lunch, the tour participants will travel to the CSM for a tour of the CSM Geology Museum. In the museum you can peruse the display of pproximately 50,000 minerals, fossils, gemstones, and artifacts. About the time you’ve seen “the best” crystals, you’ll be dazzled by the display case. From the blues of Azurite to the reds and pinks of Rhodochrosite, whites and yellows of Quartz to the oranges and yellows of Wulfenite, the wide variety of colors, along with impressive sizes and shapes make this museum tour a memorable event. The displays are well lit and documented as to the type and origin of the specimens. There is also a fine display of good old Colorado gold! Following this tour the group will travel to the Coors Winery where they will tour the brewery and partake in samples of the Coors products in the hospitality lounge. After refreshments at the Coors Winery the group will be taken back to the hotel.
