Student Paper Competition
12:00pm – 2:00pm
The Geo-Denver 2007 Organizing Committee invited graduate and undergraduate students to submit technical papers. The papers must have represented the original work of the student and have been authored by the student alone. A faculty member or other advisor may not have co-authored the paper, but may have helped oversee the preparation of the manuscript. Come join us in congratulating this year’s winner as he/she presents his/her work during the Educational Activities session of the Congress. The winner will be honored at the Hero and Awards Luncheon and will receive the proceedings for Geo-Denver 2007, as well as registration to Geo-Congress 2008.Geo-Jeopardy

Geo-Challenge Student Competition
8:30am – 12:00pm
Students Rise to the Geo-Challenge! Students from across the country will again compete in the exciting MSE Geo-Challenge. This event, when held during the G-I’s Geo-Frontiers Conference in 2005, drew over 200 onlookers to cheer on the teams and to learn how tiny bits of paper could hold back hundreds of pounds of sand. Join in the fun and watch this exciting event. This Challenge involves constructing a scaled-down model of a mechanically-stabilized earth wall where dry sand must be retained within a plywood form that has one removable panel. The stabilized wall behind the removable panel will be made of poster-board, to which kraft-paper reinforcement strips is taped. The event is judged on the wall’s capacity to support a design load (sand), the amount of reinforcement (paper) that is used, the time to construct the wall, and the quality of a design report.
