Preliminary Program

On behalf of the American Society of Civil Engineers' Environmental & Water Resources Institute, I am pleased to invite you to Palm Springs, California for the 2011 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress on May 22-26, 2011. The Congress Steering Committee is putting together a program that is intellectually and professionally stimulating and provides plenty of opportunities for networking with your peers. The program will include outstanding plenary sessions and technical presentations. It will also be the site of our annual committee meetings and offer fun social events that allow us to renew old friendships and make new ones. There will be opportunities for presenting your project or research, exhibits, co-sponsorships, cooperating organizations, student and international activities and much more.

The World Environmental & Water Resources Congress is an important opportunity for professionals in the environmental and water fields to convene and focus on topics of the day. This year's technical program focuses on “Bearing Knowledge for Sustainability”. It is important that the environmental and engineering community integrate sustainability, in dealing with today’s issues whether they be technical, economic, social, environmental or political. To that end a number of symposia are being offered including:

  • Arid Lands Symposium
  • Climate Change Symposium
  • Sustainability Symposium
  • 6th World Water Forum Symposium: North American Regional Event

The congress will also feature our traditional technical tracks such as urban water resources, dam safety, watershed management, systems engineering, water and wastewater engineering, international issues and projects, and a strong local program focused on southwest environmental water issues such as the restoration of the Salton Sea, the Bay Delta Program, and state of the art infrastructure projects.

Beautiful Palm Springs is quite pleasant in May with highs in the low 90’s and overnight temperatures just below 60. Come early or stay later to enjoy a variety of recreation opportunities such as:

  • Joshua Tree National Park
  • Several Golf Courses and Tennis Courts
  • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (Elevation 8,516 feet)
  • Salton Sea Recreation Area
  • Palms Springs Air Museum, Art Museum and Agua Caliente Cultural Museum
  • Hot springs and Spas

Many of these attractions will be included in either our technical tours or accompanying guest program.

Please mark your calendar today and join us at the oasis in the desert that is Palm Springs and help EWRI and yourself accomplish our goal of enhancing life through engineering sustainable water and environmental solutions.

Sincerely,

Mark W. Killgore, P.E., D.WRE

The Water Bearer is an archetype ; water providing the essence of new and fuller life; an earthen vessel to contain the community's wealth.  Cultural identity is derived from the local tribe's relationship to the desert oasis.  Water is the source of prosperous life and community in the desert, for commerce as well as pleasure.
