Paper Submission
The Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2008 Conference Proceedings will be published
as a copyrighted work of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Prospective authors are cordially invited to submit an abstract to the Solutions to Coastal Disasters 2008 Organizing Committee by Monday, July 16, 2007 (contact Organizing Committee after deadline).
Conference topics will focus on the science, tools, management challenges and solutions to a range of coastal hazards including:- Coastal Erosion
- Hurricanes
- Coastal Storms
- Seismic Events and Tsunamis
- Climate Change
- Sea Level Change
- Wind
Multidisciplinary topics and papers are encouraged.
Conference topics are
Physical Science:
Research and study of the forces and processes that cause or contribute to naturally and anthropogenically occurring coastal disasters
Social Science and Integrated System Knowledge:Research which includes the study of social processes defining vulnerable communities and the effectiveness of management responses, as well as advancing knowledge of transdisciplinary or co-evolving physical and social system behaviour:
- Vulnerability, resilience and adaptive capacity
- Collaborative or social learning
- Ecosystem approaches to complex systems analysis
- Governance, including issues of justice and power
Data and technologies available to help study or forecast coastal disasters
- Models and methods (numerical, analytical)
- Mapping techniques
- Coastal observing systems and tsunami warning systems
Policies, planning and management efforts to minimize or avert coastal disasters, including:
- Balance of economic, social, environmental & technical interests on the waterfront
- Comprehensive shoreline management programs
- Land use planning & regulation
- Evacuation procedures
- Issues specific to ports and marinas
Detailed examination of engineering and multi-disciplinary approaches to hazards, hazard mitigation and the consequences of these approaches, including:
- Building, Infrastructure, Lifelines & other structures
- Case Studies of completed projects
- Post-storm event site evaluations
- Rebuilding in an urban environment after a coastal disaster
- Investigations for a specific geographic region
- Examination of disaster assistance programs & success of migration efforts
Submission Procedure
Abstracts must be written in English, and the contents should not have been published or presented previously. Abstracts are limited to three pages (either A4 or US 8.5 x 11 inches), including figures and tables. An individual may not be the first author or presenter of more than one paper.
Abstracts will be submitted on-line and must include a title and the names, addresses, and email addresses of all authors. An acknowledgement of receipt of abstracts will be sent to the corresponding author.
In addition, on-line abstract submission system will ask for, the Conference Topic listed that best fits your paper. Please indicate on your abstract submission all the authors associated with the abstract, affiliations, and contact information. Please also add to the abstract submission the type of presentation (paper, poster, oral, etc.)
Review Process
Please be advised that the Solutions to Coastal Disasters conferences are highly competitive. Typically, many more abstracts are submitted than can be included in the Proceedings. We encourage a description of preliminary or final results in the abstract to demonstrate status of work. Abstracts should follow a logical development with introduction and motivation (short), procedure, and example results.
Notification of acceptance or decline will be emailed to the corresponding author by
Tuesday, September 11, 2007. Final papers are due Monday, November 12, 2007.
Conference Proceedings
Final papers of both oral presentations and the poster session will appear in the print conference
proceedings distributed to conference attendees at the conference. The ASCE publishing department
markets proceedings volumes worldwide. Individual copies of conference papers can be obtained from the ASCE Research Library. (See the Research Library to view abstracts presented at Solutions

Commitment to Attend and Expenses
Proposing authors must recognize that submission of an abstract is a commitment to complete the paper (if accepted), attend the conference, and present the paper. Submission of an abstract indicates that permission to present the paper has been obtained from the responsible owning authority of the subject project.
All expenses associated with the preparation, submission, and presentation of abstracts and papers are the responsibility of the authors. This includes preparation of high resolution digital manuscripts and illustrations. Scholarship and/or travel funds are not available for conference attendees. All attendees are required to pay conference registration fees.

- Sign in, Online ID -> is your email address, Passcode -> was sent during abstract submission, click on forgot passcode to email the passcode to your email address
- Select the "Solutions to Coastal Disasters Conference 2008" from the list
- Select the author role from the list
- Click edit author list to make changes to associated authors for the submission
- Click upload final paper to start the upload process
- Read and Accept the notes from Technical Chair to proceed
- Read and Accept the CTA (Copyright Transfer Agreement) to proceed
- Read and Accept the Permission (complete the table if required) section to proceed
- Provide the Title of the Final paper document you will upload and press continue
- Upload the Final paper document from your desktop by selecting browse and press continue
- The conversion status is displayed, select the links to the check the documents (i.e. original submitted file, and PDF conversion file), if the conversion process is unsuccessful contact ssingletary@asce.org
