CSS - CONTEXT SENSITIVE SOLUTIONS FOR TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS
8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

In the first part of this class, design professionals and local agency owners involved in Phase I & II transportation work will be exposed to the basic concepts of CSS.  The discussion will focus on the knowledge and skills to collaboratively develop transportation projects by addressing the needs of a broad range of stakeholders and special interest groups. The attendees will learn the CSS process by using actual case studies to identify critical issues early in the planning, context audit processes and programming. Attendees will learn to identify and involve stakeholders in the stakeholder involvement process. The class will also include a review of the local agencies responsibilities and department guidelines as they relate to CSS.  In the second part of this class, presenters will discuss the integration of aesthetics into the CSS process as the project moves through the planning, design, construction and operation phases. The class will also discuss how to evaluate alternatives in design flexibility. The successful implementation of CSS in the renewal of Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive will be highlighted.

URBAN TRANSPORTATION RENEWAL:  US & INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Transportation renewal in an urban environment presents unique challenges for both the designer and owner. In the first part of this two-part series, presenters will review significant transportation renewal projects from local communities in and around Chicago, IL. Four significant transportation renewal projects from the local region will be highlighted including the I-80 Kingery Expressway and I-90/94 Dan Ryan Expressway in downtown Chicago and the I-74 downtown arterial in Peoria, IL. The New Mississippi River Crossing in Collinsville will also highlight the US experience. Discussions will focus on implementation of Context Sensitive Solutions throughout the project (Planning, Design and Construction).

In the second part of the series, the challenges of urban transportation system renewal in a region of the world that lacks a strong, established government, a critical lack of quality constituent building materials and skilled labor force can be daunting. The challenges which were and are being overcome to restore and revitalize transportation systems in Kuwait and Iraq will be reviewed. Discussions will also focus on cooperative efforts between local and US organizations, and how these have benefited the people affected by the new transportation systems.

ASCE Foundation Estate & Financial Planning Seminar
4:00 – 5:30 p.m.

Janet Briaud photo

Gather invaluable financial information and useful tips at the ASCE Foundation’s free Estate and Financial Planning Seminar.  Learn how estate and financial planning can benefit both you and civil engineering!

Our guest speaker, Janet Briaud, CFP®, is a nationally recognized expert in financial planning. Married to a civil engineer who is an ASCE member, she is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences, including NAPFA, FPA and Texas A&M University. As President of Briaud Financial Planning, Janet has been included among Worth Magazine's top financial advisors list since 1994, and Financial Advisors Magazine featured Janet in the cover story of its July 2002 issue. She is the past Chairperson of the National Association of Personal Financial advisors. She has been quoted in national magazines and newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, L.A. Times, New York Times, Kiplinger Personal Finance, Investment News, Registered Investment Advisor, Dow Jones Investment Advisor, Morningstar Investor, Mutual Fund Magazine, Practical Accountant, Bloomberg Financial, Journal of Financial Planning, Medical Economics; also featured in a chapter of a book authored by Mary Roland, In Search of the Perfect Model: The Distinctive Business Strategies of Leading Financial Planners. If you are interested in learning more about Ms. Briaud and the services she provides, we invite you to visit her website www.briaud.com.

Since the estate tax limit has been raised substantially and will continue to rise, fewer people have sufficient assets for estate planning to be their primary need.  Instead, most families are concerned about how to plan for retirement. Ms. Briaud will discuss investment cycles, the psychology of markets, inflation and deflation, stock market valuations, demographic trends, and the declining dollar.

Ms. Briaud will offer free individual consultations on financial planning issues between 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m. on the same day of her presentation, if requested in advance. The seminar and consultations are offered free of charge, but space and time are limited, so please contact Jeanne Jacob, Executive Vice President, ASCE Foundation, at 703-295-6342 or jjacob@asce.org to reserve space for yourself, spouse, and/or guest. For more information about estate and financial planning visit the Foundation's website www.asce.org/foundation.

International Roundtable
2:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Moderator: Lt. Gen. Henry “Hank” Hatch, P.E., Hon.M.ASCE

Continuing the themes from the International and Sustainability Luncheons and the Sustainability Symposium, the International Roundtable provides civil engineers from around the world the opportunity to discuss global investment in basic, sustainable civil infrastructure—roads, power, water, and telecommunication, to name a few. These civil engineered systems increase economic growth and reduce poverty, and engineers are key to conceptual and detailed design, project execution, implementation, and operation.

Kathy Sierra photo Ms. Kathy Sierra, Vice President of Infrastructure at the World Bank, will make the keynote address, followed by a moderator and international panelists, who will lead the discussions. Officers of ASCE’s Agreement of Cooperation Societies, members of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, and other guests will be on hand to participate.

These questions touch on how engineers should engage with the international lending agencies, how they can effectively influence a country’s project decision-making, why engineers are not more supportive of the Millennium Development Goals, how engineers can address corruption, and how the World Bank and other international funding agencies can access the engineering community’s experience in capacity building. All annual conference participants are invited to this stimulating interchange.
