News From the Conference Chair

WELCOME TO MONTREAL

 

On behalf of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Conference Organizing Committee bienvenue (welcome) to ASCE’s 142nd Annual Civil Engineering Conference.

The 2012 program: “Civil Engineering in the New Global Economy” will examine the changes in the profession of civil engineering brought about by the integrated global marketplace. Changes in technology, innovation, and productivity across increasingly multi-cultural work environments that are allowing civil engineers to impact the world more than ever before.

The meeting opens on Thursday morning, October 18, with a keynote address by David Lapin, CEO of Lapin International, Inc., and author of Lead by Greatness. Mr. Lapin’s presentation will help you identify your most current strategic opportunities and operational challenges and, at the same time, understand and unravel the complex dynamics of the human interactions.  And for more details on what your peers and leaders in the industry see as the challenges of the new marketplace be sure to attend the Industry Leaders Forum, Friday morning, October 19.

The Program Committee is preparing exciting sessions to explore Civil Engineers role in the global marketplace and learn how advance your career in it. These sessions will incorporate the following themes:

  • Best Practices
  • Current Issues
  • Hands-on Experiences
  • Student and Younger Member Programs

We are also planning ample opportunities for you to meet and interact with your peers. Join us Friday evening for great food, new friends and a c'est magnifique! good time at the ASCE Progressive Dinner.

Additional events and programs before and after the Annual Conference include Student and Younger Member activities, and technical tours include a visit to the Center for Sustainable Development, McGill University Bellini Life Sciences Complex, and travel along the Saint Lawrence Seaway, a tour of Silo No. 5, Lachine Canal and Hydro Quebec.

Guests have the option of exploring all that Montreal has to offer on the City Tour, taste the wonders of Montreal’s cuisine on the Flavors and Aromas Tour and learn interesting facts while touring the Biosphere, Environment Museum.
