Early Career Transitions - Lessons Learned
4:15 - 5:45 p.m.
Change can be scary. As life in the classroom ends, life in the real world begins, and that means the questions and decisions are starting to pile up. Before you get overwhelmed, remember that plenty of engineers have been there before you – and survived! Now is your chance to listen to the stories – good and bad – of how four engineers navigated the turbulent first years of their career. Find out what obstacles they had to overcome in their new job, how they met people in new cities, and what they didn’t learn in the classroom that’s essential to getting the job done. Then, you’ll have the opportunity to not only ask them what’s on your mind, but also break into smaller groups with one of the panelists for more in-depth discussions. The change may still be scary, but now you’ll be more prepared to start your career on the right foot thanks to the advice of those who’ve been in your shoes before.

Younger Member Leadership Symposium
10:45 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
The Younger Member Leadership Symposium (YMLS), which will be held Saturday, October 31, at the conclusion of the Annual Conference, presents an opportunity for Society members 35 years of age and under to enhance their professional and interpersonal skill sets through a variety of interactive and instructive exercises. The YMLS will show you how to “Integrate Your Engineering Skills for a Better You.”
Sessions include:
- CYM Report – Everything you want to know about Younger Members in ASCE and how the Committee on Younger Members can help you navigate through your career.
- Your Obligation to Influence – We welcome back Solange Dao, P.E., the Civil Engineer, inspirational speaker, and entrepreneur whose joint session was a hit in Orlando. In addition to owning a land development firm in Orlando, she speaks on a variety of topics from social programming to forming unstoppable team mindsets. Solange will share new information and her thoughts on how to use your engineering skills to fulfill your obligation to influence.
- Mead Prize Presentation – The winner of the 2009 Daniel W. Mead Prize for Younger Members will be invited to share thoughts on whether it is ethical for a Civil Engineer to relax design standards to achieve a sustainable design. As Civil Engineers, ethical behavior should always be at the forefront of our efforts to help the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Educate yourself and maybe you’ll be inspired to submit a paper for the 2010 Prize.
- Supercharge your career with Personal Leadership Skills: Personal Management – The Committee on Leadership and Management brings us an interactive session on time management, work/life balance, and personal accountability. Learn methods for managing yourself – because managing yourself is a prerequisite for managing others.
- From Technical Professional to Management Professional: What’s a Civil Engineer to Do? – Panelists will share their path from technical to managerial… the trials and tribulations, the way ASCE experiences helped, tips for success, and more. Then, you’ll have an opportunity to pick their brains for more ideas or help on your own journey.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to meet and network with Younger Members, compare notes on challenges/successes, and recognize the recipients of the 2009 Younger Member Awards.
A draft agenda will be posted to CYM’s Councils and Conferences page over the summer (http://www.asce.org/inside/cym_councils.cfm).
Be sure to sign up for the YMLS with your Younger Member Conference Registration (by September 2 for Early-bird rates!). If you can only be in Kansas City on Saturday, October 31, please register for the YMLS only. Both options include lunch. We look forward to seeing you there!
