On behalf of the Pittsburgh Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Annual Program Committee, and residents of Western Pennsylvania, we welcome you to ASCE’s 138th Annual Civil Engineering Conference and Pittsburgh —”America’s Most Livable City”— on the occasion of its 250th Anniversary.
Our theme is: “ENGINEERING: The Workforce of the Future.” We hope you will be energized and challenged to support programs that attract, educate, and train talented young people in civil engineering. The meeting opens on Thursday afternoon, November 6, with a keynote address by New York Times Best-Selling Author, Jason Jennings. Mr. Jennings’ presentation will help you meet our industry’s new challenges and work productively to gain customer satisfaction, obtain staff support, and expand your firm’s bottom line. Following the CEO Forum on Friday morning, November 7, four concurrent sessions are planned:
Friday’s sessions end with a presentation on Robotics in Civil Engineering by internationally-known expert, Dr. William L. Red Whittaker, Ph.D., the Director of Carnegie Mellon University’s Field Robotics Program.
Additional events and programs before and after the Annual Conference include Student and Younger Member activities, and short courses on the Security of Critical Infrastructure and a Primer on Sustainable Design. Technical tours include a visit to a tunnel project being constructed under the Allegheny River, a boat trip to contrast an old deteriorated river lock and dam with a recently completed lock and dam, and a visit to Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Institute.
Guests have the option of visiting Frank Lloyd Wright’s world renowned Fallingwater – the famous home over a waterfall; the Phipps Conservatory – a botanical wonderland; the Frick Mansion and its art exhibits; the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh; riding an incline up historic Mount Washington for an extraordinary view; and excellent shopping opportunities at Station Square and Central Pittsburgh.
Please visit our unique city and take advantage of the professional and technical opportunities available. We look forward to seeing you.
Sincerely,
