Joseph A. “Bud” Ahearn exemplifies a lifetime of devotion to service of his country, the engineering profession and the community.  Joining CH2M HILL in April 1992, he has 15 years of experience in the private sector, delivering major infrastructure projects by developing innovative solutions.  As Vice Chairman, Mr. Ahearn serves with the Chairman-CEO in the governance and representation of the firm.  Prior to being named Vice Chairman, he was Transportation Group President and directed the planning, business development, technology programs and operations for transportation projects worldwide, and conducted strategic planning and positioning initiatives focused on advanced project delivery systems for industrial and federal clients. As the firm’s Talent Management Program sponsor and strategist, he developed and implemented succession planning, executive development and high-potential programs.

Complementing his private sector experience, his distinguished military career, achieving the rank of Major General in the U.S. Air Force, spans three decades where he was responsible for shaping financial strategy, developing budgets and executing infrastructure programs totaling in excess of $7 billion annually.  Finally, Mr. Ahearn was responsible for the Air Force’s first priority – war-fighting readiness.

He also holds numerous leadership positions in professional societies, foundations and other civic organizations, and is actively engaged in the Society of American Military Engineers, Engineers Without Borders U.S.A., American Institute of Architects, American Society of Civil Engineers and the National Academy of Construction.  Throughout his illustrious career he has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including the Air Force Order of the Sword, 1991.  The highest honor the Noncommissioned Officer Corps of the United States Air Force can bestow in recognition of extraordinary service to the military enlisted ranks and the United States of America.

Mr. Ahearn received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, and holds a Masters degree in Engineering Administration from Syracuse University.  In addition, he has completed extensive study from the Industrial College of the Armed Services, and National Security Policy, Advanced Management Program, at Harvard University.  Mr. Ahearn is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Massachusetts.
