Requirements for
Certification
Applicants for certification as a Diplomate, within ACOPNE shall demonstrate that they meet the prescribed by demonstrating:
- Actively engaged in professional practice within the Coastal, Ocean, Ports, or Navigation engineering profession.
- The applicant should be actively engaged in professional practice and shall possess a baccalaureate degree or higher from an engineering programs or equivalent, acceptable to the Board of Trustees. The applicant shall have successfully completed at least 30 semester credits, or equivalent, or upper level undergraduate courses, beyond the baccalaureate degree, acceptable to the Board of Trustees.
- Possess a minimum of twelve years of qualifying professional experience after the baccalaureate degree. Further, such work shall include active participation in responsible planning, design, analysis, operation, management, regulation, research, or teaching. In the case of teaching, the work experience shall be at a recognized engineering program acceptable to the Board of Trustees.
- Possess a current license to practice professional engineering recognized by a State, District, or Territory of the United States or certificate of registration/charter from a foreign country acceptable to the Board of Trustees.
- Agree in writing to adhere to the Academy's Code of Ethics. ACOPNE advocates for candidates in high ethical standing in the profession.
- Be required to defend his/her qualifications and professional experience in a manner satisfactory to the Board of Trustees. The requirement for an examination may only be waived by the Admissions Committee when applicants having at least 15 years of experience, clearly demonstrate that they meet all of the requirements in the requisite body of knowledge at the expert level in a manner and form acceptable to the Board of Trustees.
- Fulfill ACOPNE's Body of Knowledge (BOK) requirement for one or more of the disciplines in the Academy. The BoK's are posted on this website under the "Requirements" tab.
