International Trip Strengthens

Global Civil Engineering Ties

During July, ASCE President Bill Marcuson and ASCE Executive Director Pat Natale traveled to Japan, China and Taiwan to meet with civil engineering counterparts and explore ways to further the exchange of civil engineering information and strengthen our societies through mutual initiatives. The meetings in Japan built our relationships with our partners in the Japan Society of Civil Engineers and our ASCE Japan Section in Tokyo. President Marcuson made a presentation to the section and the Japanese Society, soliciting many questions about disaster risk management and preparedness for future natural disasters.

While in China, they met with several civil engineering organizations and companies and renewed Agreements of Cooperation with many of these societies. ASCE leaders learned about the pace of infrastructure development in China, the opportunities to assist in capacity building, and potential technological exchanges that would benefit both societies and their members.

Bill and Pat joined other ASCE leaders as presenters at the Civil Engineering Conference for the Asian Region (CECAR) held in Taipei. The conference meetings included development and signing of the Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council (ACECC) Taipei Declaration on Sustainable Development in the Asian region.  As part of a strong technical program, ASCE President Bill Marcuson joined other global civil engineering leaders to discuss sustainability in the Asian region and offered his insights on seismic design and the analysis of embankment dams during a technical presentation at the conference.
