2010 ASCE Election

1. How do I vote?
Only voting members with a valid e-mail address on record as of May 15, 2009, will receive an electronic signature via e-mail starting June 15. The email will contain a link to the voting site. If you are eligible to vote and have not received an electronic signature by June 19, you may contact ASCE Customer Service at 800-548-ASCE (2723) and request that one be provided. No electronic signatures may be provided on the phone, so a valid e-mail address is needed.

Election ballots will also be sent to the address of record for all eligible voting members by the election vendor, Survey and Ballot Systems. The election ballot will not be included in ASCE News this year, but the biographical, vision statements and other information will be published in the June issue.

2. Who is eligible to vote?
Members at the grade of associate and above who are current on membership dues as of May 15 are eligible to vote in the national election. Students, Affiliate and Institute-only members are not eligible to participate in the election. Only members of ASCE and an Institute are eligible to vote for the Technical Region Director.

3. Can I vote for the EWRI officers?
Yes, with the new format for delivering the election ballot, eligible members of the Environmental Water Resources Institute (EWRI) may vote for their Vice President on-line or via the paper ballot delivered by Survey and Ballot Systems. Student members of the EWRI are ineligible to vote.

4. Why is the delivery method of ballots being changed?
ASCE is looking for ways to cut costs, preserve resources, and streamline the voting process. With the new procedure, Institutes, Sections, Branches, Councils or Regions can be a part of one ballot, provided the voting schedule is the same. Delivery of a paper ballot will eliminate the need to produce extra copies of ASCE News and reduces the postage cost.

5. I thought there were three nominees for the office of President-elect, but only two nominees are listed. Why?
Three individuals declared their intent to pursue the office of President-elect as of December 1, 2008. Those individuals were interviewed by the Board of Direction Nominating Committee on April 23, 2009. Pursuant to the Society's Bylaws, Article 7.3.5.2, the Nominating Committee shall select two (2) Official Nominees for President-elect. Candidates who are unsuccessful at the Board Nominating Committee level may seek a petition route to the election ballot.

6. What is the purpose of the At-Large Director?
Following the election cycle each year, the Board of Direction At-Large Subcommittee develops criteria for the next At-Large Director and submits that to the Board of Direction for approval. The At-Large Director position was designed to provide expertise in an area that is not currently being met by the current make-up of Board members. For example, if infrastructure funding is a key area of focus for the Board during the upcoming year, the successful individual would have experience in that area. The Board Nominating Committee is permitted to select only one (1) nominee to be placed on the election ballot as the Official Nominee. Due to the fiduciary responsibility of Board members, all nominees must be elected to rather than appointed to a position. For information on the selection process of the At-Large Director, please see Bylaws, Article 7.5 and Rules of Policy and Procedure, Article 7.9.

7. Why are many races uncontested?
It is the responsibility of the Region Nominating Committee to provide Official Nominees for the vacant positions. If Region members do not express an interest to serve at the national level, then the candidate pool is limited and often results in uncontested races. Contested races are noted below by the number of open positions. A notice of vacant positions within each Region is published in the September issue of ASCE News. If you are interested in serving at the national level, or you know someone who would be a good candidate, please contact your Section or Branch President, Region Governor, Region Director, or ASCE Geographic Services.
