MOVE FORWARD

ASCE is embarking on an exciting journey into the future. Our destination has been defined, our roadmaps are being entered into our GPS, and our itinerary is being planned. The time has come to start our engines and MOVE forward.

M: Member-Driven and Member-Focused

We are the American Society of Civil Engineers. As implied in those words, a guiding principle of the Society is to provide first-class service to our members. To do this consistently, the Society must be member-driven and member-focused at all times. Many of our members participate in ASCE through our Sections and Branches and, increasingly, through our Regions. The breadth and depth of the programs being delivered by our Geographic Units is truly phenomenal. The culture of the geographic units is based on member and community service. Preserving and nurturing that culture throughout the Society will MOVE us forward. Many of our members also participate in ASCE through our eight Institutes. Their culture is focused on technical excellence. Embracing the mission, ability, and motivation of the Institutes to deliver world-class technical resources will MOVE our Society forward.

O: Opportunity

The flexibility of our Strategic Planning and Strategy Management process allows us to act today. The wisdom of our Vision for 2025 ensures that our near-term actions will have long-term benefit.

The future leaders of our Profession and our Society are our Student and Younger Members. They represent a culture of teamwork, social consciousness, connectivity, and advanced technology. They genuinely want to make the world a better place. They represent a challenge and an opportunity for ASCE to remain relevant. Our methods of communication, our social and professional networking, and our program development and delivery must all adapt. Successfully engaging these future professionals now will dynamically MOVE us forward.

ASCE has been very successful in our government relations efforts to positively influence public policy. With the new national emphasis on infrastructure renewal, the opportunity to build on our role as advisors and recognized experts on infrastructure and protection of the public health, welfare, and safety has never been greater. Elevating the use of our 2009 Report Card to include tangible action plans, including improved public works policy and infrastructure development and maintenance plans, will MOVE us forward.

V: Vision

ASCE's vision is identified in our Vision for Civil Engineering in 2025, supported by our Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century, and our on-going Strategic Planning and Strategy Management process. We are poised to aggressively MOVE forward by aligning these activities to optimize our resources. Wise, effective, and efficient use of our resources will also require the prioritization of ASCE's current programs and services.

Vision 2025 provides a comprehensive set of five outcomes. ASCE's immediate actions should focus on:

• Promotion of infrastructure improvement and comprehensive planning for its continued development, maintenance, and operation. This includes the incorporation of the concepts of sustainable and secure development.
• Creation of a collaborative environment to facilitate cross-communication and engagement between our Elected Leaders, Committees, Institutes, Geographic Units, and Staff under a common vision.
• Adoption of the NCEES Model Law, which embraces ASCE Policy Statement 465 - Academic Prerequisites for Licensure and Professional Practice, by State Legislatures and Professional Licensing Boards. This will require a more detailed definition of the "+30" education requirements beyond the Bachelors Degree.

These actions will MOVE us forward.

E: Excitement

C'mon - Civil Engineering IS exciting! Engineers Without Borders is an excellent example of a program that has created tremendous excitement within our Society. ASCE's entirely new, imaginative, and highly interactive online presence will also create tremendous excitement in the near future. Many other exciting initiatives come forward each year. Generating a "buzz" around the opportunities to serve our members, to advance our profession, and to improve the global quality of life makes membership in ASCE fun (yes - fun!) and rewarding. Excitement will MOVE us forward. We have amazing Members, marvelous Opportunities, clear Vision, and real Excitement. Those are all the resources we need for a successful journey. Let's put them all together now and MOVE forward!
